27: Tram Underpass at Kingsway in Holborn

Tram underpass at HolbornAs the bus crosses the junction, you will see a set of steel gates, usually locked, behind which lies a sloping cobbled roadway leading to a tunnel entrance. Last used in 1952, this was part of an extensive London tram network. The rails are still visible in the roadway which continued underground all the way to the Embankment near Waterloo Bridge. A section of the tunnel has been adapted for use today as a car underpass but at this end it is simply a storage depot for the council road maintenance department.
