A Grenadier was a soldier trained to throw grenades. The Grenadier Guards today are
familiar to tourists as the Buckingham Palace sentrymen wearing the tall bearskin
hats and red jackets.
The original building (1720) on this site, was an army officers' mess and located
in a courtyard of their barracks. It became a pub in 1818 called The Guardsman but
was renamed after the Battle of Waterloo. The current building dates from 1843.
