34: Somerset House and Courtauld Gallery

Somerset HouseJust after the second church (St. Mary le Strand) the grey stone arches of Somerset House can be seen. Contemporary art shows take place through the year, and if you are a fan of Impressionist paintings, don't miss the permanent collection at the Coutauld gallery, with world-famous masterpieces such as van Gogh's 'Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear', and Manet's last painting 'A Bar at the Folies-Bergère'. The courtyard at Somerset House becomes an ice-rink for the period around Christmas but normally there are just fountains.
